Chief Executive

As Chief Executive of the Whakatāne District Council, you will support a forward-thinking Council in leading a district renowned for its natural beauty, diverse communities, and thriving industries. The District boasts stunning beaches like Ōhope, which has been named NZ’s Most Loved Beach (NZ Herald 2023). Whakatāne township has been recognised as the Most Beautiful Large Town (Keep NZ Beautiful 2023) and the District is high in the sunshine stakes. The District is a key contributor to New Zealand’s agricultural sector, with intensive dairy, horticulture, and sustainable forestry. Its multicultural community is particularly rich in Māori culture and history, and residents are passionate about a lifestyle that includes a thriving arts community, walking, cycling, water sports, fishing, rafting, kayaking, hunting, and more.

As Chief Executive, you will lead a team of 320 professionals passionate about delivering diverse services, ensuring the District remains an attractive place to live, work, play, and invest in – all the while enhancing its social, economic, cultural, and environmental wellbeing.

To excel in this role, you must be a senior leader with a proven track record in leading an organisation or major business unit. Your effective people leadership will empower your team to achieve the Council’s vision. Your integrity and leadership style will help you engage with iwi, stakeholders and the community, fostering enduring, collaborative relationships. Your experience will equip you to guide the Council through reforms, leveraging your financial acumen, entrepreneurial spirit, and governance skills to navigate challenges and seize opportunities. Your focus on community engagement and service delivery will keep the Council responsive to the District’s needs. You will work with an experienced group of elected Members that love their part of the world and want to make it even better.

This is a once-in-a-career opportunity to join a forward-looking Council and lead a dedicated team in enhancing community wellbeing while enjoying a dynamic community and excellent lifestyle.
