The Ombudsman’s primary role is to investigate complaints against government agencies and to provide advice, guidance and training to public sector agencies. The Chief Ombudsman operates through mana, persuasion and evidence-based opinion. 
The Chief Ombudsman is an Officer of Parliament and is independent of government. The role is taking responsibility for independently safeguarding the rights of individuals and for promoting government accountability and transparency. That is, providing for an independent, impartial oversight mechanism for Parliament and to report on whether people are being treated fairly in our country. As such, the role helps ensure there is a high level of public trust in our government.
The Chief Ombudsman is responsible for leading and administering the Office and its approximately 240 staff along with a requirement of regular engagement with the Speaker and Select Committees and key leaders across the government system.
To be considered for this important appointment, you must have proven senior leadership experience within the public sector along with a sound understanding of New Zealand’s constitutional framework. You will be able to confidently engage with and advise members of Parliament and government agencies. You will have the background and ability to operate with independence and impartiality, with impeccable integrity and a sense of what is fair. You must have a good knowledge of tikanga Máori and knowledge of the Treaty and its constitutional position. You will be suitably qualified in public or administrative law or a related discipline and ideally be able to obtain a Top Secret Special Security clearance.
