Chief Executive – Eastern Institute of Technology
- Transform vocational education in Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast for the future
- Rare opportunity to rebuild
- Rewarding community focused role
The Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) is entering a bold new chapter as a newly independent Institute of Technology and Polytechnic (ITP), following the disestablishment of Te Pūkenga. We are seeking a visionary and transformative Chief Executive to lead this transition and shape the future of vocational education across Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiti.
This is a rare opportunity to take the helm of a well-regarded institution with deep community roots, a proud history, and a strong brand. EIT is known for its commitment to learner success, its strong relationships with local industries and iwi, and its reputation for delivering high-quality, practical education that meets the needs of the community.
About the Role
As Chief Executive, you will be responsible for leading EIT across its three campuses Hawke’s Bay, Tairāwhiti and Auckland and six regional learning centres. You will oversee all aspects of academic, financial, operational, and strategic leadership, ensuring the institution is sustainable, responsive, and future-focused.
You will:
- Lead the transition from Te Pūkenga to a standalone ITP, ensuring continuity for staff, students, and stakeholders.
- Set and deliver a compelling strategic vision for vocational education in the region.
- Build and empower a high-performing leadership team and organisational culture.
- Ensure academic excellence, financial sustainability, and robust governance.
- Champion equity, access, and success for all learners, including Māori, Pasifika, disabled, and underserved communities.
- Engage deeply with iwi, industry, government, and community partners to ensure EIT remains relevant and impactful.
About You
You are a seasoned executive with experience leading large, complex public sector or tertiary organisations. You will bring:
- Proven leadership in academic governance, financial stewardship, and organisational transformation.
- An understanding of New Zealand’s tertiary education system and public accountability frameworks.
- The ability to lead with empathy, integrity, and strategic foresight.
- A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to inclusive, learner-centred education.
- Exceptional stakeholder engagement skills, especially with iwi, industry, and community groups.
This is more than a leadership role—it’s an opportunity to live in one of New Zealand’s most beautiful regions. The wider Hawke’s Bay and East Coast regions offer a wonderful quality of life and community connection. As one of New Zealand’s most resilient communities, they are rebuilding to be stronger than ever. If you’re keen to be part of seeing EIT reclaim and surpass its place as one of New Zealand’s leading vocational education providers, this is your opportunity.
