Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the Role 
The scope of the Economic Strategy Division has recently expanded to create a very exciting work programme for the Division. We lead Treasury’s advice on what matters most for lifting New Zealand’s economic performance in a changing global environment. We are also a centre of excellence for embedding analytics and modelling across Treasury’s economic and broader policy advice.  
 
The Division’s responsibilities include:  

  • Leading advice on New Zealand’s economic performance, productivity and the role of the Māori economy 
  • Stewardship of key policy frameworks, in particular He Ara Waiora and the Pacific Operating Model  
  • Leading and convening cross-government work on economic security and managing global risks and opportunities for the New Zealand economy 
  • Supporting The Treasury and Minister of Finance’s international engagements, including our relationship with the international financial institutions, APEC and the OECD 
  • Macro and fiscal modelling as well as micro and administrative data analysis, which underpins Treasury’s broader work on the most complex economic and fiscal policy challenges and opportunities facing New Zealand.  

 
In this role, you will be supporting the delivery of Te Tai Ōhanga Te Ao Māori Action plan, including lifting capability in Treaty analysis and the application of He Ara Waiora to New Zealand’s most complex fiscal and economic challenges and opportunities. 
 
 
Ō Pūmanawa | About You 
To succeed in this role, you’ll bring: 

  • Experience in policy advice or related analytical fields, with a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in areas such as Economics, Finance, Public Policy, Law, Māori Studies or Social Sciences 
  • Strong analytical, critical, and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and complexity to deliver practical advice 
  • Proven experience in weaving te ao Māori perspectives through public policy advice, including applying policy frameworks, analysing issues, and producing actionable recommendations 
  • A strong understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and demonstrated experience in its application in policy development to ensure equitable outcomes for all New Zealanders 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences, including Ministers 
  • The ability to build and maintain professional relationships across a range of stakeholders and Māori partners to deliver impactful policy solutions. 
  • Intellectual curiosity and a commitment to manaakitanga, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment 
  • Has high cultural intelligence and a growth mind-set
