Scouts Aotearoa empowers young people through adventurous experiences to lead lives that make a positive difference. Every year we help 12,000 young people in New Zealand enjoy new adventures, experience the outdoors, make new connections, and gain confidence. We give young people the opportunity to reach their full potential.

As National Chair you will lead the governance of the organisation through both the National Board and National Council. You will work closely with the Chief Executive planning and implementing the strategic direction of the Association. You will also have a close relationship with the National Commissioner who, as the lead volunteer responsible for inspiring and motivating volunteers throughout the Movement, provides the Scouting context and direction for the organisation.

This is a critical governance position, and we are searching for an outstanding leader to take up the challenge. In addition to strong governance skills, this board requires a chair with:

● passion for youth development
● excellent relationship building and communication skills
● strategic vision and the ability to bring clarity and focus to the delivery of the strategy
● a belief and support for diversity and inclusion and the passion to act as a catalyst for cultural change.

Knowledge of Scouts is not necessary however some experience in the not-for-profit sector and of funding strategies would also be useful.

An understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the aims and aspirations of Māori along with a strong knowledge of Te Ao Māori and tikanga is required.

This is a voluntary position which involves four board meetings and two National Council meetings a year, in various locations in New Zealand. Several board meetings will be held online. There will also be regular interaction and support for the Chief Executive. All reasonable travel costs and out of pocket expenses are covered by the Association.
