Houkura – Independent Māori Statutory Board (Houkura) wants to advance the interests of Māori in Tāmaki Makaurau by helping Auckland Council to make decisions, perform functions and exercise powers that improve outcomes for Māori, as well as promoting cultural, economic, environmental and social issues of significance to Māori.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role
Reporting to the General Manager – Advisory and Performance, you will provide dedicated support for the Houkura to undertake its work programme and achieve its legislative purpose and functions. With an enthusiasm to affect change for Māori in Tāmaki Makaurau, you will provide advice on strategy, policy, planning, as well as providing advice on the design and execution of documents and processes to implement the Council’s statutory responsibilities towards economic outcomes for Māori.


Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
The successful candidate will have:

  • Sound leadership skills and the ability to influence and create a culture that aligns with our values
  • Recent experience in a role that has required formal engagement with Māori
  • Understand the place of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Local Government environment
  • A degree in either business management / commerce or other relevant field
  • 6+ years policy experience and report writing
  • Understanding of te reo Māori me ōna tikanga
  • The ability to navigate political relationships and environments
