People and Safety Lead

  • Wellington CBD location
  • Opportunity to make this role your own
  • A role with purpose in a supportive team environment

Are you a savvy HR operator with the creativity and drive to lead out a workforce strategy that will shape this organisation’s capability and performance now and into the future?

This is your opportunity to step into a role where you’ll go beyond business as usual and develop new ways of doing things. You’ll bring fresh thinking, challenge the status quo, and design a workforce strategy that works not just for an office-based team, but for a large network of contractors spread right across the country.

The QEII National Trust is an independent charity that encourages and promotes the protection, preservation, and enhancement of special areas of land across Aotearoa. The Trust works in partnership with private landowners to protect our natural and cultural heritage to benefit present and future generations.

We’re looking for a People and Safety Lead who’s ready to step up and make this role their own. The role is part strategy, part advisory, and part hands-on delivery where your ideas, energy and leadership will directly shape how QEII National Trust supports its people and keeps them safe and thriving.

You’ll work closely with the Chief Executive, Board and senior leaders as a trusted advisor, bringing insight and momentum to people, culture and safety across the organisation.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead the development and delivery of a forward-thinking workforce strategy and roadmap
  • Own and deliver all people and safety functions, including HR, workforce planning, organisational development, and health & safety
  • Provide expert, pragmatic advice to leaders across the organisation on people, culture and safety
  • Shape how QEII National Trust attracts, supports and develops both employees and contractors across Aotearoa
  • Champion a strong, values-led culture that enables people to do their best work
  • Lead organisational development initiatives that build capability and future readiness
  • Ensure a robust, compliant and continuously improving health and safety environment for all employees and contractors

What you’ll bring:

  • Senior-level HR or People & Culture experience, ideally in a lead or standalone capacity
  • Experience developing workforce strategies and driving organisational change or development initiatives
  • Strong understanding of New Zealand employment relations and health & safety legislation
  • Experience supporting a geographically dispersed or contractor-based workforce (highly desirable)
  • Confidence operating at senior leadership level, balanced with a willingness to roll up your sleeves
  • Excellent relationship-building, communication and influencing skills
  • High integrity and sound judgement when working with sensitive information

What will set you apart:

  • You are smart, curious and motivated to learn
  • You bring a positive, can-do attitude and a desire to achieve outcomes
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity and excited by the opportunity to build, shape and improve
  • You think differently and are motivated to create better ways of working

This is a great opportunity to work in a role with real scope in a values-led organisation that is driving good environmental outcomes.

To apply for this role, you must be eligible to live and work in New Zealand.
