The Governance team sits within Council Operations and plays a central role in supporting effective local democracy. Providing expert advice, oversight and support to elected members and staff, the team helps ensure Council decision-making processes remain transparent, compliant and efficient.
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role
Tasman District Council is seeking either a Governance Advisor or Senior Governance Advisor to join its Governance team. This is a specialist governance opportunity supporting Council, committees and community boards through the delivery of professional governance services, legislative guidance and democratic processes. The level of appointment will reflect the successful candidate’s experience, capability and depth of governance expertise.
Working in a busy and fast-moving environment, this role requires someone who can quickly understand complex issues, manage competing priorities and provide confident governance advice. The position works closely with elected members, senior leaders and staff to ensure decision-making processes meet legislative requirements and reflect governance best practice.

This role will suit a governance professional who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment and can confidently support effective decision-making. The ability to quickly understand issues, provide practical advice, build strong relationships and navigate legislative requirements will be key to success.
The ideal candidate will offer:
- Governance experience, ideally within local government
- Knowledge of the Local Government Act and Standing Orders
- Political acumen
- Strong judgement and problem-solving capability
- Resilience and the ability to think on your feet
- Excellent communication and relationship management skills
- Relevant qualification in legal studies, management or a related field, or equivalent experience
