Independent Chair
- Chair a board that embraces challenge and fresh thinking
- Help shape a stronger construction industry for generations to come
- Experienced chair with strong financial capability
The CGF (Construction Growth Foundation) is an industry-led organisation representing 19 construction sector associations. Established to strengthen the capability, resilience and long-term sustainability of New Zealand’s construction industry, CGF invests in initiatives that advance education, training and professional development, strengthen leadership, business and governance capability, and create opportunities for cross-sector collaboration and the sharing of best practice. It is well positioned to bring together different parts of the construction industry, identify opportunities for collective action and invest in initiatives that create enduring value for the sector.
The organisation is entering its next stage of development and is looking to appoint an Independent Chair.
The role
This is an opportunity for a skilled governance leader who can get the very best from a committed and diverse board. As Chair, you will foster an environment where directors contribute openly and confidently, encouraging robust discussion, constructive challenge and strategic debate.
Working closely with the Chief Executive, you will ensure the Board remains focused on the opportunities and challenges facing the sector, testing assumptions, exploring new possibilities and helping position CGF for long-term relevance and impact. There is genuine scope to be bold, challenge conventional thinking and help shape a stronger future for one of New Zealand’s most important industries.
About you
You are an accomplished Chair with experience leading boards through growth, change or organisational evolution.
You will bring:
- Proven Chair, Deputy Chair or significant board leadership experience
- Strong governance capability and contemporary governance knowledge
- The ability to facilitate robust discussion while building collective ownership of decisions
- Excellent strategic and commercial judgement
- A track record of challenging assumptions and helping boards think beyond the status quo
- Strong financial acumen, including experience overseeing organisational performance, sustainability, investment and risk
- Highly developed stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
- Independence of thought, sound judgement and personal credibility
An understanding of the construction sector would be advantageous, together with a genuine interest in the sector’s future and the importance of skills, vocational education, industry training and workforce development.
Above all, you will be a skilled board leader who knows how to create an environment where directors can contribute at their best, ideas are rigorously tested and opportunities are actively pursued.
The Board generally meets every second month through a mix of online and in-person meetings, with the annual programme typically comprising up to ten meetings. In addition, the Chair will commit time to regular engagement with the Chief Executive and engagement with CGF members and key industry stakeholders when appropriate.
This is an opportunity to chair an organisation with a unique sector-wide mandate, strong industry support and significant potential to influence the future capability and performance of New Zealand’s construction industry.
